About us
Metro Animal Care and Control (MACC) is a dynamic division of Nashville’s Metro Public Health Department, serving the diverse and growing community of Davidson County. As the primary municipal shelter, we combine the resources of a government institution with the heart of a progressive animal welfare organization. Our mission extends far beyond traditional shelter medicine – we’re driving systematic change in animal welfare across Nashville-Davidson County.
Our medical team delivers high-quality care at a meaningful scale, from comprehensive shelter medicine to high-volume spay/neuter services. We’re proud to support not just the animals in our direct care, but also those in our extensive foster network and recent adoptions. This unique position allows our veterinary team to develop exceptional surgical skills while having a lasting impact on community health.
What sets us apart is our collaborative, solutions-focused approach. We partner with organizations throughout Nashville to create better outcomes for animals, implementing innovative programs that address core community challenges – from reducing pet overpopulation to expanding access to preventive care. Our team of dedicated professionals brings together the best of public service and veterinary medicine, offering a supportive environment where evidence-based medicine meets compassionate care.
For veterinarians seeking both professional impact and personal balance, MACC offers a unique opportunity. You’ll practice high-quality medicine while enjoying the stability of public service – including predictable schedules, excellent benefits, and paid time off. Join our team and help shape the future of animal welfare in one of America’s most vibrant cities, all while maintaining the work-life harmony that makes a sustainable career possible.
In so many ways, we get to help the lost, injured, and abandoned – protecting both them and our citizens through shelter, adoption, treatment, population control, and humane rescue. Every day, we make a real difference in the Metro Nashville community.
About this role
As a veterinary professional, you already understand the core responsibilities of clinical practice. - Drive Program Innovation: Shape and implement protocols that affect thousands of animals annually. You’ll develop medical guidelines, train staff, and collaborate with local universities to advance shelter medicine practices.
- Champion Animal Welfare: Combine your veterinary expertise with forensic work in animal cruelty cases, providing expert testimony that brings justice to animal victims. Your medical assessments will directly influence animal protection in our community.
- Guide a Medical Team: Provide leadership and mentorship to veterinary technicians and shelter staff, fostering a culture of compassionate care while maintaining high medical standards.
- Build Community Solutions: Work beyond the shelter walls by participating in public health initiatives, managing community clinic programs, and developing partnerships that expand access to veterinary care across Nashville-Davidson County.
